Sound Living began not as a large corporation, but as a passion project created by Gary and Jarmila Singer. With deep experience in technology, consulting, and software engineering, the Singers took what they knew best and poured it into something new: a boutique smart-home consultancy grounded in craftsmanship, curiosity, and genuine care.
How It All Started...
It all began in 2002 with a simple idea and the desire to build something of their own. Gary transformed the first Sound Living location in Chicago’s Wicker Park, completing the entire buildout in just five months. Two years later came their son Sam, and Jarmila joined the business—becoming Gary’s partner in every way. Baby Sam spent much of his first year in the Sound Living showroom, nestled into the daily rhythm of a growing family and a growing company.
A Passion for Homes That Feel Extraordinary
In 2006, they welcomed their second son, Ben. Life became a beautiful mix of small children, a small business, and long days filled with possibility. As the business evolved, so did its home. In 2011, Sound Living moved to Highland Park, and in 2018 relocated again—this time to Barrington, where they built an intimate, carefully crafted showroom on Station Street in the heart of downtown.
Fast forward to today: Gary has retired from Sound Living and is now embracing his “Version 2.0,” returning to his psychology roots and dedicating his time to mental wellness and human flourishing. Jarmila has stepped into ownership and now leads the company’s daily operations. A familiar face with renewed vision, she brings deep technical expertise in motorized window treatments and a genuine love for working alongside the design community. As a woman leading in a predominantly male industry, she is grateful for the support, encouragement, and warm welcome from clients and partners.

Jarmila Singer is now the guiding force behind Sound Living's modern vision. With a strong technical background in home automation and a deep appreciation for thoughtful design, she brings both expertise and creativity to every project.
After years of building the business alongside her husband, Gary, Jarmila now leads Sound Living with a fresh perspective and a commitment to elevating the client experience. She loves collaborating with designers and helping homeowners bring greater comfort, beauty, and simplicity to their spaces.
As a woman in a predominantly male industry, Jarmila values the encouragement and partnership she’s received and remains dedicated to fostering a warm, collaborative, and design-forward approach in everything she does.
